SpecialCare Planner

Hello, and thank you for visiting my special needs planning website.

The vision that I have for my community is one day to have people of all abilities truly valued and respected not for how people score on aptitude tests or how much money people earn but the intrinsic value that we all have as human beings which is to say that we are all Imago Dei, “image-bearers of our Creator."  The preamble of the Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  My daughter, Briseis, has Micro Warburg Syndrome.  It is a rare disorder that has caused her to have multiple disabilities, including intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities.  My wife, Andrea, and I only want her to be safe, secure, and happy.

The findings of Congress, when enacting the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), are that disability is a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminishes the right of individuals to participate in or contribute to society.  Improving educational results for children with disabilities is an essential element of our national policy of ensuring equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.  It is my goal as a special needs planner to come alongside parents of minor and adult children with disabilities to ensure that those ideals and our best intentions for our loved ones come to fruition.

My means by which I use to help other parents in similar situations are to methodically plan for all life's stages of a person with a disability.  It is necessary to intentionally plan by developing a Life Care Plan.  It is prudent to memorialize our intentions in a Letter of Intent or Memorandum of Intent to the next generation of our children's caregivers.  In nearly all cases, it is necessary to develop legal documents that will provide the framework by which our authority transfers to those who are trustworthy.  It is necessary for us to plan for unknown catastrophic events like a loss of income or property due to premature death, disability, divorce, job losses, lawsuits, natural disasters, and health events.  It is necessary for us to be wise with our resources and plan for known events like education, retirement, end-of-life care, and our eventual deaths.

Planning for these things is not always comfortable and seem daunting.  Procrastination is the enemy.  I recommend taking the first step by contacting me, and we can plan together over time and overcome each barrier.

I hope to hear from you soon.  Contact my office. We can meet and share our stories.
